BHS girls reach playoffs

On Monday night, the Division 6-4A slowpitch softball gamebetween Brookhaven and Mendenhall had a lot riding on the outcome.A loss by Ole Brook would eliminate the Lady Panthers from playoffcontention. A win would put Brookhaven in the postseason as the6-4A runner-up, meaning a trip to the Mississippi Gulf Coast toopen the playoffs.

Mission Accomplished.

The Lady Panthers will be making their annual trip to thepostseason, following a 6-1 Monday win over the Lady Tigers at theLady Panther Softball Complex.

With the win, the Lady Panthers improved to 14-10 overall andfinish 7-3 in the division, behind division champion LawrenceCounty.

It will be Senior Night for Brookhaven tonight, as they hostBogue Chitto for a JV/Varsity doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. TheLady Panthers close out the regular season at Warren CentralThursday.

Brookhaven 6, Mendenhall 1

“It was a good win for us,” said Lady Panther head coach LisaCovington. “We are going to the playoffs somewhere on thecoast.”

The Lady Panthers scored in the first for a 1-0 advantage.Leadoff batter Hannah Lowman tripled and later scored on aMendenhall fielding error.

Ole Brook extended their lead to 4-0 in the third. Brooke Hosickreached on an error. Brittany Bateman singled. With 1 out, KarleeMartin walked to load the bases. Third baseman Casey Risher’sdouble scored Hosick and Bateman. Sabrina Delaughter’s sacrificefly to left center field plated Martin.

Mendenhall, coached by Brad Smith and Carey Craine, got theirlone run in the fifth. With 1 out, Raven Hubbard reached on anerror. Lauren Powell singled. Keziah Jenkins singled to load thebases. Tiffany Sims reached on a fielder’s choice that scoredHubbard.

Covington’s crew added a pair of runs in the sixth. PitcherBrianna Ashmore singled. Catcher Christen Benson singled to leftcenter, but Ashmore was thrown out at second. Erica Bridwellwalked. Hosick singled to load the bases. Bateman grounded into afielder’s choice that scored Benson. Hosick would later score on aLowman double.

Lowman paced Ole Brook with a single, a double and a triple.Martin singled and doubled. Benson had 2 base hits.

The Lady Tigers got a pair of singles from Raven Cameron.

Brookhaven posted a 10-4 over Mendenhall in the junior varsitygame. In the JV game, Hosick, who singled twice, picked up the win.Lending support were Erica Bridwell with a single and a triple.Carey Crozier singled and doubled.
