Wesson hands St. Andy’s first loss

WESSON – The Wesson Lady Cobras rallied for 4 runs in the bottomof the seventh inning Tuesday night to beat the previouslyundefeated St. Andrew’s Lady Saints 9-8 in slowpitch softballaction. St. Andrew’s (20-1) committed 7 errors and Wesson made4.
Wesson finished the season with a 6-3 record in districtplay.
In the bottom of the seventh, Wesson trailed St. Andrew’s 8-5.Summer Rials led off with a single. Ann Shelby Davis doubled andscored Rials. Dallas Jackson singled. With one out, Leah Greerdoubled to score Davis and Jackson. Macie McQuade singled to scoreGreer for the game-winning run.
“I am proud of the girls,” said Wesson coach Hugh Webb. “We havea nucleus coming back and we should be successful in the comingyear.”
Seniors Laney McQuage, Haynes and Jackson were recognized beforethe start of the game.
St. Andrew’s led 2-1 over Wesson in the first inning. The Saintsoutscored the Cobras 6-2 in the second inning to push their lead to8-5 until the bottom of the seventh.
“Overall, we did well in district,” said Webb. “We were one gameaway from going to the playoffs. We struggled early with ourpitching.”
Adding support for Wesson at the plate with a hit were Davis,Jackson, Maddy Rials and Maura Smith.
For St. Andrew’s, Ashton King led with 3 hits. Carolyn Huff andKarissa Bowley each ripped a pair of hits. Hitting safely were MaryFord, Kristin Long, Carolyn Womack, Thea Myers, Ashland Mendrop,Haley Hausiy.
“Laney McQuage really come through for us,” added Webb.. “Davishit and fielded the ball well.
The injuries hurt us early on. I thought we did okay.”
McQuage (7-1) was the winning pitcher with 3 walks. Mary HelenFord took the loss.
