Bassfield wins big over Hornets

BASSFIELD – A pair of Loyd Star fumbles in the first quarterhelped the Bassfield Yellow Jackets to a 36-7 win over the HornetsFriday night in the first round of the Class 2A state footballplayoffs.
Loyd Star, coached by Ryan Ross, finishes the season 4-6.Bassfield improved to 9-2 and advances to the second round of theplayoffs where the Jackets will host Philadelphia.
Bassfield led Loyd Star 29-0 before the Hornets punched in theironly touchdown of the game with 4:01 left in the third quarter.Marquis Sims scored on an 11-yard TD and Chris Buie kicked theextra point.
Tradareous Wilson powered Loyd Star with 12 rushes for 50 yards.Sims rushed 7 times for 31 yards. Carrying 6 times for 22 yards wasMarquis Hayes.
Hornet quarterback Joseph Shelby completed 3 of 12 passes for 37yards. Smith led with 1 catch for 18 yards T.J. Floyd made 1 catchfor 14 yards. Glenn Thomas had 1 catch for 5.
The Hornet defense was led by David Fields with 18 tackles. AndrewRushing and Preston Hebert collected 9 tackles apiece. Making 7stops was Antione Smith. Recovering a fumble was David Horton.
