Hornets, Lady ‘Cats win tourney

The Loyd Star boys and Bogue Chitto girls claimed the LincolnCounty Round-Robin Basketball Tournament championships Saturdaynight in the Loyd Star gymnasium. BC’s Lady ‘Cats edged Loyd Star48-43 in overtime, handing the Lady Hornets their first loss of theseason.

The Loyd Star boys (9-0) remained undefeated and beat BogueChitto 64-46 in the final game.

In the early games, West Lincoln’s girls beat Enterprise 60-29 andthe Enterprise boys surprised West Lincoln 29-28.

The Lady ‘Cats (7-1) avenged a 5-point Tuesday night loss to LoydStar at Bogue Chitto. They were directed by Darcy Miller’s 15points. Shelby Tobias chipped in 10 points.

Coach Christi Terrell of Bogue Chitto said her team played well.”Our girls were able to pull it through. We managed to do what weneeded to do at the end.”

On the boards, Kelli Howard had 10 rebounds plus 6 steals for BC.Miller had 5 assists and 5 steals.

Shannon Chester, Loyd Star’s leading scorer, was in early foultrouble and fouled out late in the fourth quarter. Senior centerHaley Sones carried Loyd Star with 16 points, 8 rebounds and 7blocked shots.

“Bogue Chitto kept plugging and made some key baskets,” said LoydStar coach Billy Vaughn.

On the backboards, Sarah Falvey led Loyd Star with 12 boards andSones had 8. Chester had 6 rebounds. Falvey had 4 steals.

The Lady Hornets (8-1) held a 26-19 halftime lead. BC outscoredthem 11-3 in the fourth quarter to send it into overtime at41-all.

Loyd Star 64, Bo’ Chitto 46

“This is the first time we have won this tournament in threeyears,” said Loyd Star boys coach Gene (Moochie) Britt. “Ourdefensive pressure was a big factor. We got some easy baskets.Offensively, we didn’t shoot the ball well. Bogue Chitto was veryphysical. The kids played well.”

Glenn Thomas pumped in 14 points to lead the Hornets. McKinleyHamilton fired in 11 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. Also netting 11points was DeAndre Butler. Joseph Shelby grabbed 5 rebounds andmade 9 steals.

Bogue Chitto, under first-year coach Curt Crain, got 18 points fromMike Harris.

Enterprise 29, West Lincoln 28

In the other boys game, Taylor Everett directed the Yellow Jacketswith 8 points followed by Russell Perry and Jamie Smith with 7points. Enterprise is coached by John Knight.

The West Lincoln boys, coached by Lane Young, were led by MicahBivens and Brett Rushing with 9 points apiece.
