HAZLEHURST – Two weeks after a Christmas night burglary on theHazlehurst Wal-Mart, authorities are still looking for the public’shelp in pinpointing suspects.
Police Chief Byron Swilley said an unknown assailant orassailants broke into the Wal-Mart just after midnight Dec. 26 andstole some unspecified merchandise. He said based on the crime, police believe more than one person was involved, and definitelymore than one person had to know about it.
“Someone may have heard some talk about it or may know someonewho was involved,” he said. “It’s going to be more than oneperson.”
Swilley said at this point in the investigation there have beenno arrests made, and the police department has not listed anypersons of interest. The store’s security system was functional, but the photos on the security tapes did not lead to a conclusivedescription of the subjects.
“We’ve got some images of the suspects, but they werewell-covered,” he said.
There may be reason to believe the burglars are not fromHazlehurst, Swilley said.
“The thing about it, we don’t know if we’re dealing with localsor someone from one of the surrounding areas,” he said. “We justwant to get the word out wherever we can. Someone knows somethingabout this.”
Swilley said as feedback comes in, police may publicize moredetails of the crime.
Anyone with any information on the crime is asked to call theHazlehurst Police Department at 601-894-1181 or Crimestoppers at1-601-355-TIPS (8477) or 1-888-8CRIMES (827-4637).
