Hornets blast St. Joe

Loyd Star guard Ashton Fox pumped in a game-high 29 points todirect the undefeated Hornets to an 85-61 Division 6-2A win overthe visiting Madison St. Joseph Bruins Friday night.

The win pushed the undefeated Hornets’ winning streak to 19-0.In the division, Loyd Star is 8-0.

In varsity girls action, senior center Haley Sones fired in 23points, grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked 3 shots in pacing the LadyHornets to a 65-45 victory over the Lady Bruins.

Loyd Star entertains division foe Enterprise Tuesday for 4games. The junior varsity girls game begins at 4 p.m.

Loyd Star 85, St. Joe 61

“We played well in spurts,” said Loyd Star boys coach Gene(Moochie) Britt. “We came around in the second half. Our outsideshooting was good tonight. We managed to sub others in to get themsome experience.”

Contributing to the Loyd Star win with 21 points, 7 rebounds, 3steals, 4 assists and 3 blocked shots was McKinley Hamilton.Following with 14 points, 3 steals and 4 assists was Glenn Thomas.DeAndre Butler grabbed 8 rebounds. Fox added 5 rebounds and made 4steals.

“Loyd Star has a great team,” said St. Joe coach Scott Pughsley.”We did not come out ready to play against a good team.”

The Bruins (9-6, 3-4) were led by Steve Cofer with 17 points.Nick Pernell netted 16 points.

Loyd Star 65, St. Joe 45

The Lady Hornets (16-5, 5-3) got added support from ShannonChester with a triple double of 16 points, 13 rebounds and 15steals. Leah Britt pulled down 9 rebounds and had 4 assists.

“Overall, we played sloppy,” said Loyd Star girls coach BillyVaughn. “We defended St. Joe’s (Brittany) Bailey well in the firsthalf but she got away in the second half.”

The Lady Bruins (8-7, 4-3) were led by Bailey’s game-high 29points.

“We gave a good effort in the second half,” said St. Joe girlscoach Keith Barnes. “If we were able to have the same effort in thefirst half, it would have been a different game. Loyd Star wasready to play and took control of the game early.”

Junior varsity boys

Loyd Star handed St. Joe a 35-26 loss.

The Hornets got 12 points from Keldric Smith and 5 points fromPreston Hebert.

St. Joe got 8 points apiece from Tim Shinn and John Carney.
