Chaffin rescues BA boys

Sidney Chaffin made his presence felt Saturday night in John R.Gray Gymnasium. His last-minute heroics lifted the BrookhavenAcademy Cougars to a thrilling 49-47 comeback victory over theNatchez Trinity Saints.
Chaffin, a transfer from Natchez Trinity this season, gained theCougars a 47-47 deadlock with 20 seconds left to play when he hit agame-tying trey. Then he stole the ball and cashed it in for thewinning layup with just four seconds left on the clock.
In the varsity girls game, BA cruised to a 52-38 triumph,directed by center Anna Katelyn Mangold and forward Laura BethWright with 13 points each. Terah Winborne chipped in 12.
The Cougars (20-5) had trailed Trinity the entire game.
“It was a big, big win for us,” said BA boys coach Dale Watts.”Sidney came in and did a good job for us.
“We ran a blitz trap after we got a tie,” Watts said. “Wedouble-teamed and Sidney got a steal for us.”
Powering the Cougars (20-5) with 14 points each were Jake Reedand Chaffin. Josh Winborne fired in 11 points and grabbed 5rebounds. Reed also led off the backboards with 6 rebounds and had4 assists
“It was a good learning experience, even though we lost,” saidTrinity coach David King. His team had beaten the Cougars in thefinals of the BA Holiday Classic but then lost on their home floorto the Cougars the next Saturday night.
Trinity was led by multi-talented guard Brandon Daggs with 13points and 5 rebounds. Following with 10 points was R.J.Fleming.
The Saints led 29-26 at halftime.
The Lady Cougars (23-4) dominated Trinity, leading the LadySaints 32-15 at halftime.
On the backboards, Mangold and Wright each grabbed 8 rebounds.Winborne claimed 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals.
Trinity was led by Caroline Ketchings who scored a game-high 20points. Madelyn Cross pulled down 11 rebounds as the Lady Saintsoutscored BA 23-19 in the second half.
Brookhaven Academy visits Jackson Prep Tuesday night.
