McComb sweeps Lawrence County

MONTICELLO — McComb swept Lawrence County in a Division 6-4Abasketball doubleheader Tuesday night at LCHS. In varsity girlsplay, McComb broke away in the final minutes of the game for a58-41 win. The boys game was also close for three quarters, butMcComb again pulled away, claiming a 60-50 win.

In the girls’ game, McComb led 37-34 through three quarters, andthe game remained tight until the last four minutes, when the LadyTigers’ pressured Lawrence County into numerous turnovers andpulled away to a comfortable victory.

Shanekqua Bibbs led the Lady Tigers with 19 points, and PortiaCraft added 11.

The McComb girls improved to 19-5 overall, and 11-1 in Division6-4A play.

For Lawrence County, freshman sensation Tiaria Griffin hit five3-pointers en route to a game-high 21 points. Alexandria Harris had8 points. Coach Vicki Rutland’s girls fell to 13-11 overall. Theyenter Friday’s Region 6-4A finale against Brookhaven with a 5-6division record.

Coach Preston Wilson’s underdog Cougars hung tough againstfavored McComb until the final minutes, much like in the girls’game. Tradarious Holloway scored 16 of his 18 points in the secondhalf, powering the Tigers to the win. Ladarious White added 15points. Hilton Harrell’s team improved to 19-7 overall, and 8-4 inthe division.

Lawrence County got a career-high 16 points from Mark Haynes,and Leroy Fifer had a big night with 15. LCHS fell to 9-16 overall,and 3-9 in the division.

Lawrence County will host Brookhaven in the regular seasonfinale Friday. Varsity girls action tips off at 6 p.m.
