Helmstetter no-hits Florence on Sr. Night

Nick Helmstetter authored a no-hitter on Senior Night, sparkingthe Brookhaven Panthers to a 10-0 victory against the FlorenceEagles in Division 6-4A action on Moyer Field. Helmstetter (7 K, 2BB) was among four BHS seniors: Bud Britt, Jarvis Wilbert and IsaacJones; along with Diamond Dolls Courtney Johnson and Taylor Hallprior to last night’s chilly contest.
“Nick pitched a good game,” said Ole Brook coach Randy Spring”Our seniors have done a good job all year. Everyone managed to hitthe ball.”
Helmstetter, a Meridian Community College signee, entered thegame with a stingy 0.92 ERA. He has been selected to play in thissummer Mississippi Association of Coaches All-Star Game.
Spring’s Panthers (18-6, 13-3) are vying for the runners-up spotin the division race. That would give them the advantage of hostingan opening round series in the Class 4A state playoffs that beginnext week.
They’ll invade Florence for a division twinbill, starting at 5p.m.
Against Florence, the Panthers collected 12 hits. They took a7-0 lead in the second inning and added 3 more runs in thefourth.
“We faced a tough pitcher tonight,” said Florence coach JimmyBooth. “We couldn’t get anything going.”
Doubles by Chris Seals, Isaac Jones, and Gabe Wilson paced thePanthers. Two hits were collected by Helmstetter, Jarvis Wilbertand Brandon Foster.
Junior Varsity Results
In the JV game, BHS romped to an 11-0 victory. Patrick Valentinepitched the win.
At the plate, J.D. Britt doubled and singled for the Panthers.Drew Jones and Joel Patrick doubled. Seals, Foster, Wilson, andE.J. Henderson singled.
A single by Jason West led Florence.
