Walk lifts Hornets to No. 2 in division

While trying for an inning-ending out, the visiting St. Andrew’sSaints helped the Loyd Star Hornets to a 5-4 Division 6-2A winThursday night. In the bottom of the ninth, with the game tied4-all, St. Andrew’s put Loyd Star’s No. 1 hitter Travis Keene onfirst base, loading the bases. The Saints unintentionally walked inCory Smith for the game-winning run and suffered their firstdivision loss.
St. Andrew’s remains the No. 1 seed in the district followed byLoyd Star at No. 2, Wesson at No. 3 and Enterprise at No. 4. LoydStar plays at Lumberton Thursday in the opening round of the Class2A state playoffs.
The victory made amends for an 11-5 Tuesdasy night loss at St.Andrew’s in which the Hornets committed 11 errors.
Monday, Loyd Star (16-6, 7-3) entertains North Forrest at 4:30p.m. with the junior varsity and the varsity at 6:30.
Senior ace Drew Weaver was the winning pitcher with 6 strikeoutsand no walks in going the distance for Loyd Star.
“Drew threw an outstanding game,” said Loyd Star head coachJonathan Breakfield. “I am proud of our guys. Everybody steppedup.”
St. Andrew’s led 4-1 until a 3-run rally by Loyd Star in bottomof the seventh tied the game at 4-apiece.
Powering the Hornets with a double and a single was Keene. LeeboBairfield singled 2 times.
Daniel Sweet doubled twice for St. Andrew’s Elliot Varneysingled twice. Doubling was Jarred Myers.
