Wesson slugs Summit

WESSON – The Wesson All-Stars defeated the Summit All-Stars 12-6Friday night at Hiram Newman Field in the opener of a best-of-threeseries for the Dixie Youth Baseball Major League 12s District SixTournament Championship.

The second game will be played in Summit Monday night at theWindsor Gay Youth Sports Complex, starting at 7 p.m.

The Wesson All-Stars collected 12 hits including 4 home runs.Summit followed with 5 hits, including a homer.

“We finally started hitting the ball,” said Wesson coach JerryHood after the game. “Summit is a real good team. They whipped us17-7 in a scrimmage game earlier. We come out to play tonight.”

The Summit All-Stars are coached by Sambo Roberts.

C.J. Viramontez was the winning pitcher with 7 strikeouts, 2walks and 5 hits allowed.

Summit’s Dakota Gressett took the loss with 7 strikeouts, 3walks, 1 hit batter and 12 hits allowed.

“C.J. has pitched well all season,” said Hood. “Seventy-fivepercent of his pitches were curve balls. He loves to throw it.”

In the first inning, Summit’s Levi Wishart planted Wessonpitcher C.J. Viramontez’s first pitch over the center field fencefor a quick 1-0 lead. Gressett singled, then stole second and thirdbase before coming home on a wild pitch and push Summit’s lead to2-0.

Wesson responded with 5 big runs in the bottom of the first totake a 5-2 lead. Jace Alexander and Mac McQuage both walked andthen stole a base. Mack Smith was hit by Summit pitcher Gressett.Alexander stole from third for the first run. Peyton Hood drilled adouble to drive in another run. With 1 out, Colby Porter smashed a3-run homer over the center field fence.

Wesson put together another 5-run inning in the bottom of thefourth. Viramontez and Porter singled. Connor Lowery walked to loadthe bases. Mac Daughdrill smashed a grand slam homer over thecenter field fence to push the hosts ahead 9-2. Two batters later,Trent Nettles ripped a solo homer to push the lead to 10-2.

In the top of the fifth, Summit came to life, scoring 3 runs andcutting the deficit to 10-5. Grant Renegar and Brooks Englessingled. Rusty Davis smacked a 3-run homer.

In the bottom of the fifth, Wesson scored 2 more runs to pushits lead to 12-5. McQuage led off with a solo homer to make it11-5. Hood singled and Viramontez was walked with 2 outs. Hoodstole home on a passed ball for the 12th run.

Summit added 1 final run in the top of the sixth inning.Squirrel Brown and Wishart singled. Wishart stole second and thirdbase before racing home on a single from Roberts before the finalout was made.
