Valerie Wall Campbell Mills

Ethel Valerie Wall Campbell Mills, 92, died after a long illnesssurrounded by her family on Sept. 22, 2009, at Mississippi BaptistMedical Center in Jackson. Visitation is Thursday, Sept. 24, fromnoon until 3 p.m. at Faith Presbyterian Church in Brookhaven.Funeral services are 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, at FaithPresbyterian Church with burial in the Rosehill Cemetery.Brookhaven Funeral Home in Brookhaven is handling thearrangements.

Mrs. Mills, a lifelong native of Brookhaven, was the daughter ofBrookhaven banker and attorney Hugh Vernon Wall and church organistEthel Pitts Wall. She attended Judson College and was a graduate ofLouisiana State University and a member of Kappa Delta Sorority.She was married to Brookhaven businessman and former Mayor JewelHilton Campbell. She had three daughters, Valerie, Melanie andSylvia. Following the death of Mr. Campbell, Mrs. Mills marriedFulton S. Mills, a Brookhaven native and Jackson civilengineer.

Her first love was her three daughters to whom she was a devotedmother. A large portion of Mrs. Mills’ life was devoted to theleadership of the State Bank and Trust Co. where she served on theboard of directors for more than 40 years. She served as presidentof the Climbers Club and Matinee Musicale and served as regent ofthe Ole Brook Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution. Herlove of music, acquired from her mother, was widespread amongBrookhaven’s churches and arts organizations. She was a soloist andchoir member at the First Baptist Church of Brookhaven, FaithPresbyterian Church and soloist for High Holy Day services at B’naiShalom Synagogue. She was a member of Faith PresbyterianChurch.

Survivors include her three daughters, Valerie Hall, ofBrookhaven, Melanie Thomas, of Vicksburg, and Sylvia Hall, ofRidgeland; her sons-in-law, Dr. James Hall and Dr. Charles Hall;and her grandchildren, Valerie Hall, Madeleine Hall, Sam Hall,Campbell Engle, Granville Engle, Michael Engle, Sylvia Hall andCarolina Hall. She also leaves behind her longtime and devotedcaregiver and friend Hattie Cowart.
