Lady Cobras cruise past Stringer

WESSON – Powered by senior guard Ann Shelby Davis’ 25 points andthree steals, the Wesson Lady Cobras cruised to a lopsided 68-20win over the Stringer Lady Red Devils Wednesday night in theopening round of the South Mississippi Class 2A Playoffs.
Wesson (25-6) travels to Bay Springs Friday to meet Newton in thequarterfinals. The game begins at 7 p.m. The semifinals will beplayed Saturday and the finals Monday.
“Now it’s out of the frying pan and into the fire,” said Wessongirls coach Hugh Webb after the win. “Stringer is not as good aball club as we are used to seeing. Our girls played well againstthem. But we missed some shots we should have made.”
Stringer scored first and tied Wesson 4-4 early in the firstquarter before the Lady Cobras went on a 12-0 run to take a 16-4lead. The Lady Red Devils tried to stay with the Lady Cobras in thesecond quarter, trailing 30-14 at halftime. The hosts, despitesubbing in the third quarter, outscored the visitors 22-4 to take a52-18 lead into the final frame.
“I wish Wesson the best,” said Stringer head coach Mary Smith.”They are a good group of girls. They showed goodsportsmanship.”
Contributing to the Wesson win with 10 points, 2 steals and 5assists was Macie Case. Shauntay Walker pulled down 9 rebounds andmade 4 steals. Blocking 4 shots was Danielle Tadlock.
Rebecca Valentine led Stringer (6-12) with 10 points. Leah Woodspulled down 7 rebounds.
