Man charged in Friday shooting death

A Brookhaven man is behind bars following the Friday nightshooting death of his girlfriend’s father, officials saidSaturday.

Lincoln County Sheriff Steve Rushing said William E. “Bubba”Thompson, 45, of 2131 Harbor Lane, Bogue Chitto, was killed Fridaynight in an altercation with his daughter’s boyfriend, AndrewHammond, 21, of 677 Virginia Ave.

“We got a call about a subject being shot on Harbor Lane,”Rushing said. “Right now, initially, it appears to be the result ofa domestic dispute between a father and a boyfriend.”

Rushing said authorities received the call just before 10 p.m.Friday.

When responders arrived on scene at the home of Gena Thompson,they found Bubba Thompson shot. Hammond had closed himself in aback bedroom in the mobile home until law enforcement arrived onscene.

Officials said the manner and details of the altercation areunder investigation.

“There was a confrontation that resulted in Mr. Thompson beingshot, and all that’s pending official autopsy results,” Rushingsaid.

Hammond was arrested and charged with murder in theincident.

Thompson was transported to King’s Daughters Medical Center byambulance, where he was pronounced dead by Lincoln County CoronerClay McMorris at about 11 p.m.

“He died at KDMC, and it’s under investigation for sure,”McMorris said Saturday. “We’ve got an autopsy being done today, andwe’re going to see what the pathologists say.”

McMorris said from what he could see prior to the autopsy, theredid not appear to be any other wounds on Thompson’s body.

Thompson’s funeral arrangements are being handled by RiverwoodFamily Funeral Service. Visitation is Monday from 5-9 p.m., withservices Tuesday at 11 a.m. Burial will be at Wellman BaptistChurch Cemetery.

Hammond’s bond has not yet been set.
