Wesson captures 2A region crown

WESSON — All the Wesson Cobras needed was a split Friday nightwith the visiting Enterprise Yellow Jackets to capture the Region6-2A baseball title.

The Cobras didn’t wait and took care of business as they beat theJackets 7-1 in the first game to take the title and picked up a17-6 victory in the finale despite the winds and the occasionaldownpour.

Wesson (17-7, 11-1) hosts the Taylorsville Tartars Friday in thebest-of-three series in the first round of the State 2A playoffs.Taylorsville will host Wesson Saturday. If a third game isnecessary it will be played at Wesson the following Monday.

Enterprise, coached by Cass Brister, falls to 9-16 on the seasonand 4-9 in division play.

“It’s great to win district,” smiled Wesson head baseball coachHugh Knight following the games. “And we won it outright. TheEnterprise baseball team is tough. They battled hard.”

Knight said the Cobra pitching staff has risen to thechallenge.

“Our pitchers have done an outstanding job,” said Webb. “We havereally played well.”

Wesson 7, Enterprise 1

Wesson junior right-hander Matt Smith (5-1) went the distance forthe win in the first game. Smith finished with 9 strikeouts, 4walks and 3 hits allowed. Taking the loss was starter Garrett Greerwith 1 strikeout, 8 walks and 6 hits allowed. Working the final 2.1innings was Zach Stafford with 5 strikeouts, 2 walks and 2 hitsallowed.

Wesson took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Enterprise came back totie it 1-all in the top of the fourth. In the bottom of the fourth,the Cobras put together 4 runs for a 5-1 lead. Wesson added a runin the fifth and sixth innings for a 7-1 lead.

Junior outfielder Gage Wilson powered the Cobras with a home run, adouble and a single. Matt Smith singled twice for 2 RBI. Triplingwas Pat Boone. Caleb Broome and Gib Britt singled.

Leading the Jackets with a double apiece were Travis Leggett andCody White. Greer singled.

Wesson 17, Enterprise 6

In the second game, Britt (2-1) got the win in relief of starterWilson who worked the first 2 innings with 4 strikeouts, 4 walksand 2 hits allowed. Britt followed with 4 strikeouts 3 walks and 2hits allowed.

Wesson took a 2-0 lead in the first inning but Enterprise came backto take a 3-2 advantage in the top of the second. The Cobrasexploded for 5 runs in the second to take the lead at 7-3.

In the fourth, Wesson collected 10 runs and held Enterprisescoreless in the top of the fifth to enforce the 10-run rule andend the game.

Kyle Cross powered the Cobras at the plate with a 1-RBI double anda 2-RBI single. Wilson doubled twice for 3 RBIs. Ripping a doubleand a single was Tyson Wesley. Broome had an RBI single. Brittsingled.

For the Jackets, Nathan Foster smashed a 3-RBI double. Cody Whitehad a 2-RBI double. Doubling was Jedd Moak. Jarrett Toddsingled.

Todd took the loss with 5 strikeouts, 3 walks and 5 hits allowed in2 innings on the mound. Starter Cody White worked the first inningwith 1 strikeout, 3 walks and 1 hit allowed. Following Todd for thefinal 2 innings was Jackson Cole with 1 strikeout, 2 walks and 2hits allowed.
