Co-Lin sweeps Hinds, lands in state tourney

WESSON – The Co-Lin Lady Wolves swept a key South Divisionsoftball doubleheader from the Hinds Community College Lady EaglesMonday to capture the South Division No. 3 seed.

The Wolves won the opener 13-5 and prevailed 6-3 in thefinale.

Co-Lin (28-15, 15-9) squares off against North No. 2 seed EastMississippi Thursday at 2 p.m. in the 2-day MACJC State Tournamenthosted by North Division champ Itawamba Community College inFulton. Hinds falls to 11-31 overall and 5-22 in thedivision.

“These are two big wins for us,” said Co-Lin head coach Allen Kent.”Hinds is not a pushover. We got clutch hits when needed. We playedbetter on defense in the second game.”

Co-Lin 13, Hinds 5

Posting the win was freshman hurler Bethany Pinkston (26-11) with 1strikeout, no walks and 1 hit batter. Courtney Carson absorbed theloss with 1 strikeout and 5 walks.

Hinds took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Co-Lin came back in thesecond for 4 runs, highlighted by a 2-RBI homer by TerriHodges.

At the end of the third, the Wolves led the Eagles 6-2. In the topof the fourth, Hinds cut the deficit to 1-run, 6-5, with 3 runs. Inthe bottom of the fourth, Co-Lin came back with 3 runs for a 9-5lead. Powering the Wolves with a triple and 2 singles was HaleySones. Erica Rutland ripped a double and a pair of singles. HolliSmith singled 3 times. Monea Cameron and Debra Hamor each doubledand singled. Doubling was Daniele Wilson. Lakin Lockhartsingled.

For the Eagles, Carson led the way with a pair of singles. Doublingwas Terra Stewart. Saisha Roan and Mackenzie Pettit hitsafely.

Co-Lin 6, Hinds 3

Hodges (1-5) collected the win in the second game with 4strikeouts, no walks and 1 hit batter. Sarah Franco had nostrikeouts, 3 walk and 2 hit batters.

The game was scoreless until the third inning when Co-Lin collecteda pair of runs. Hinds tied the game in the top of the fourth with 2runs. The Wolves exploded for 5 runs in the bottom of the fifth fora 6-2 lead.

Wilson sparked the Wolves at the plate with a double and a single.Sones and Smith collected 2 singles apiece. Doubling were Walkerand Lockhart. Rutland singled.

The Eagles got a home run and a double from Megan McDaniel. Carsonand Franco hit safely.
