BA boys capture AA state tennis title

RIDGELAND – Directed by Will Hickman and Alex Gray in No. 1 andNo. 2 singles, the Brookhaven Academy boys marched to their sixthstraight MAIS Class AA State Tennis Tournament championshipWednesday at the Ridgeland Tennis Center. Coach David Misner’sCougars also got a first place performance from Dudley Lampton andMyles Melancon in No. 1 boys doubles.
The Cougars amassed seven points and runner-up Oak Hill of WestPoint was a distant second with four points. BA’s girls were unableto defend their state title and failed to score a pointyesterday.
Lamar School of Meridian captured the girls team title with fivepoints and Yazoo City Manchester was runner-up with four points.Grenada Kirk and Oak Hill each scored three points.
In No. 1 boys singles, Hickman defeated Harris of Marshall6-1-6-0 in the semis and Moorehead of Glenbrook 6-4, 6-2 in thefinals
In No. 2 boys singles, Gray beat Fronterotta of Hillcrest 6-1, 6-0in the semis and Kelly of Oak Hill 6-1, 6-2 in the titlematch.
In No. 1 Boys Doubles, Lampton and Melancon beat Rice/Metusiak ofOak Hill Ac 6-1, 6-1 in the semis and Crisler/Peaster of Manchester6-3, 6-1 in the finals.
In No. 2 boys doubles semifinals, BA’s Michael Kavitz and BrennanMiller defeated McPhail/Peaster of Manchester in split sets: 5-7,7-6, 6-2. In the finals they lost to Williamson/Pryor of Oak Hill6-4, 7-5.
In mixed doubles, BA’s Grant Melancon and Madison Warren lost toBurns/Riley of Oak Hill 6-3, 6-0 in the semis.
In No. 1 girls singles, BA ‘s Terah Winborne lost to Ready of OakHill 6-4, 6-0. In No. 2 girls singles, BA’s Lindsey Winborne lostto Clark of Lamar 6-1, 6-0.
In No. 2 girls doubles, BA’s Dana Sartin and Courtney Williams lostto Sanford/Story of Lamar 6-1, 4-6, 7-5.
