Lady Cougars fall short in holiday bout

The Brookhaven Lady Cougars and the Leake Academy Lady Rebelsprovided a classic battle between two heavyweight teams in the MAISClass AA division in the championship finals of BA’s HolidayClassic Tournament in John R. Gray Gymnasium.
The Lady Rebels managed to outscore the Lady Cougars 13-5 in thethird quarter and held on for a 43-36 victory.
In the girls’ consolation games, the Centreville Lady Tigers, whoare coached by John Gray, captured the early consolation game witha 50-37 win over the Prentiss Christian Lady Saints.
The Delta Academy Lady Raiders won third place in the tournamentwith a 48-31 win over the Marshall Lady Patriots in a consolationgame.
The Lady Cougars and Cougars will take a small break to enjoy theNew Year’s holiday before returning back to action Tuesday hostingBowling Green. Tip off is set to begin with the girls’ game at 6p.m., followed by the boys.
Leake 43, BA 36
Junior guard Terah Winborne and senior center Anna Katelyn Mangoldled the Lady Cougars (13-2) in scoring with 12 points apiece.Mangold crashed the board to lead BA with 9 rebounds. Winbornecollected 3 steals and dished out 5 assists.
“The girls played extremely hard against a good team,” said BACoach Barry Gray. “Our defense was extremely good, we manage tohold Leake to 40 points in the game. Hopefully, we can get anothershot at them in the playoffs.”
Sophomore guard Hannah People stepped up and had a good gameshooting to lead the Lady Rebels (22-0) with 14 points. JennyWilbanks, a 6-0 senior, center, contributed 13 points.
“This was a physical game for both teams,” said Leake Coach DoyleWolverton. “This type of game could have went either way. We werefortunate things bounced our way. Brookhaven Academy is a very goodteam and they are well coached.”
Centreville 50, Prentiss 37
Katie Berry pumped in a game-high 26 points to lead the LadyTigers. Renee Miley provided 12 points.
The Prentiss Christian Lady Saints were led in scoring by twoplayers that knocked down 8 points apiece by Taylor Dumas and MaryMorgan Dungan.
Delta 48, Marshall 31
Morgan Shook was the top scorer for the Lady Raiders with 17points. Marley Anne Schiele contributed 13 points.
Carlie Clanton was the leader of the Lady Patriots by scoring 11points.
