Brookhaven Academy bags wins at Kirk

GRENADA – The Brookhaven Academy Cougars and Lady Cougars wereSaturday winners over Kirk Academy. The Lady Cougars posted a 42-31triumph as junior forward Laura Beth Wright sacked 13 points.
The Cougars roared to a lopsided 71-29 victory as senior centerSidney Chaffin poured in 22 points and guard Brock Smith sacked14.
The Lady Cougars (17-2) scored the last 10 points of the game tosquash Kirk’s comeback.
“It was a good game with two good teams,” BA girls coach Barry Graynoted. “They are ranked No. 3 (in AA) and we are ranked No. 2. Itwas a big win in their gymnasium.
Gray’s girls led 20-11 at halftime, racing to an early 9-0advantage. They carried a 32-24 lead into the fourth quarter.
On the backboards, Mary Lindsey Magee grabbed 6 rebounds and Wright4. Summer Calhoun made 4 steals
The Lady Cougars outrebounded Kirk 19-11. They only had 9 turnoversand Kirk had 15 miscues.
BA resumes play Tuesday, hosting Amite School Center for 4 games,starting at 4 p.m.
Kirk (18-7) got 9 points from Alye Lundy.
The Cougars (10-7) got 8 rebounds from Gage Posey. Chaffin andBrock Smith each had 7 boards. Smith made 4 steals and 2assists.
“We’ve had a good week of practice,” said BA boys coach Dale Watts.”We have a long way to go but we are getting better. Sidney(Chaffin) stepped up and did a good job for us tonight.”
Watts was pleased to see his team romp to a 36-14 halftimelead.
