Brookhaven Academy smashes Simpson

Senior Night brought out the best in Sidney Chaffin. TheBrookhaven Academy senior center accounted for 24 points and 10rebounds in leading the Cougars to a 56-40 Friday night win overSimpson County Academy.
In the varsity girls game, senior center Anna Katelyn Mangold andjunior guard Terah Winborne scored 14 points each as the LadyCougars blasted Simpson 63-29.
The Lady Cougars (22-3) got 6 rebounds from Mary Lindsey Magee.Marian Allen, Mangold and Winborne each had 5 rebounds and Wright4. Allen dished out 8 assists and Winborne 4. Wright had 5 steals.Winborne and Allen each had 3 steals.
BA’s six seniors were recognized Friday night. They includedMangold, Magee, Allen, Summer Calhoun, Haley Langston and AnnaLofton. They were presented roses and special crosses designed byTerri Warnock.
Coach Barry Gray’s BA girls are seeded No. 1 in the District 4-AATournament that starts Thursday at Bowling Green Academy inFranklinton, La. The BA boys, 6-time defending state champions, areseeded No. 2 behind Columbia Academy. Both BA teams play Friday inthe semifinals, guaranteeing them of a berth in either Saturday’sconsolation or championship games.
BA’s senior boys include Chaffin, Michael Evans and ChandlerRogers. Coached by Dale Watts, the Cougars (13-9) took a 23-16halftime lead over Simpson and outscored the visitors 24-11 in thethird frame.
On the backboards, Brock Smith grabbed 12 rebounds and scored 10points. Gage Posey accounted for 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Posey dished out 6 assists and Brennan Miller made 3 steals.
Simpson got 22 points from Devin Millis.
