Franklin County girls win Region 7-3A tourney

HAZLEHURST — The Hazlehurst boys and Franklin County girlscollected the Region 7-3A Tournament Championship trophies Fridaynight in Hazlehurst Gymnasium. The Lady Bulldogs, ranked No. 1 inClass 3A used the dynamic combination of Vintrice Briggs andJessica Jackson in the second half to defeat Wilkinson County52-45.

In the boys’ title game, Hazlehurst won 71-49 over theBulldogs.

The Lady Bulldogs (23-1) took a 12-10 lead over Wilkinson County atthe end of one, but the Lady Wildcats outscored them 8-5 in thesecond quarter to take an 18-17 lead into intermission.

Briggs, the Lady Bulldogs All-State forward, scored 18 of hergame-high 20 points after halftime while Jackson finished with 10points. FCHS rallied in the third quarter, taking a 39-30lead.

Wilkinson County outscored Franklin County 17-13 in the fourthquarter, but it was not enough.

For Wilkinson County, Lineasia Palmer and Tyesha Harris had 16points apiece.

FCHS, coached by Charles Moore, will play host to Perry CentralMonday at 7 p.m. while Wilkinson County hosts West Marion in thefirst round of the Class 3A South State Playoffs.

The Indians (14-10) used some crafty 3- point shooting and 14points from senior guard Gabriel Gray to overwhelm theBulldogs.

Franklin County (13-8), coached by Chris Jordan, got 15 points fromMilton Griffin in the losing effort. Dee Bowie had nine.

“Hazlehurst made contested shots and the game got away from usearly,” said Jordan. “They hit six threes in the firstquarter.”

The Indians raced to a 26-14, first-quarter advantage.

The Bulldogs and Indians will both host a playoff game Tuesday at 7p.m. Franklin County hosts Collins and Hazlehurst entertainsSeminary.
