Hinds AHS turns back Lady Jackets

Hinds AHS employed an aggressive full-court defense and a20-point performance by Region 6-2A MVP Eugena Grigsby to turn backthe Enterprise Lady Yellow Jackets 57-43 Friday night in the regionchampionship game at Loyd Star. The Lady Bulldogs (21-6) bumped andclawed Enterprise, causing 16 turnovers in the last three quartersof action.

Enterprise (13-17), coached by Jill Nations, will be home Mondaynight for the opening round of the South Mississippi 2A playoffs,hosting the Lake Lady Hornets. Tipoff is 7 p.m.

In the consolation game, Madison St. Joseph dumped Wesson’s LadyCobras 53-43. Wesson’s boys and girls play at Scott Central Mondaynight in the opening round of the South playoffs. The girls gametips off at 6 p.m.

Hinds AHS 57, Enterprise 43

“Our pressure (defense) got us some easy baskets,” said Hinds AHScoach Bruce Baker whose Lady Bulldogs were 10-0 in region play.They lost to New Site in the semifinals of last year’s statetournament.

Grigsby, a 5-10 junior, had plenty of support on offense. Fieryfreshman point guard Erica Harris tossed is 15 points, scoring 10the second half. Leanna Washington, a 5-11 senior post, added 13points.

“It was a really rough game,” said Enterprise coach Jill Nations.”My girls played very hard and never gave up. They played towin.”

Senior guard Karla Beth Hux led the Jackets with 14 points. She had4 steals.

Sophomore center Veonka Sanders pulled down 11 rebounds and blocked4 shots. Sophomore Taylor Nelson scored 10 points.

Enterprise stayed in contention through the first half. The Jacketsgained a 28-28 tie on 2 free throws by Quandrea Roberson with 1:17left to play.

The Bulldogs increased their defensive heat in the second half andoutscored Enterprise 9-4 in the third quarter.

St. Joe 53, Wesson 43

Corbin Divinity, winner of the region’s Sportsmanship Award, scoreda game-high 20 points for the Lady Bruins (14-13) in theconsolation game. Arianna Cargin chipped in 15 points as theyzoomed to a 28-15 halftime lead.

Wesson (10-13), coached by Rusti Magee, got 18 points from MadisonRials. On the backboards, Wesson got 6 rebounds apiece from MoodyJames, Mackenzie Rials and Maura Smith.
