Allen fans 13 batters in victory over Bears

Senior right-hander Korey Allen struck out 13 batters, walked 1and scattered 5 hits in pitching Loyd Star to a 14-4 Monday nightwin over the West Lincoln Bears as the rain-delayed Lincoln CountyTournament continued. Loyd Star centerfielder Marquis Hayes sluggeda grand-slam homer in the fifth as the Hornets remained unbeaten in5 games.

Jared Case (5 K, 10 BB) absorbed the loss and was replaced in thefifth by Jay Case during a 7-run Hornet explosion.

“Korey pitched a great game on a cold night,” said Loyd Star coachJonathan Breakfield. “He threw strikes and only walked 1batter.

“I thought (West Lincoln’s) Jared Case pitched well until he hitthe wall in the fifth,” Breakfield added. “He threw about 80pitches.”

Travis Keene and Logan Smith doubled for Loyd Star. Catcher JeremyLaird hit a double for the Bears.

“We competed well for the first 4 1/2 innings,” said West Lincolncoach Steve Barrington. “We must get better at throwing strikes andgiving ourselves a chance to make plays.”

Loyd Star led 3-0 after 2 innings. The Bears cut their deficit to3-2 before the Hornets broke loose.

In the JV game, Loyd Star shut out the Bears 3-0 as Aaron Durr,Dylan Watts and Branden Canny combined for a shutout.

Loyd Star resumes play Friday at McComb, starting at 7 p.m. OnSaturday, the Hornets are at West Lincoln. The JV game starts at 11a.m., followed the varsity at 1 p.m.
