Co-Lin clips Gulf Coast in 10

WESSON – Co-Lin freshman Ashley McCaffery ended a 3-hour,10-inning marathon Tuesday with a game-ending RBI single. Herclutch connection sent Jamie Cochran racing home with the winningrun as the Lady Wolves upset No. 11-ranked Mississippi Gulf Coast8-7.

After winning the opener, Co-Lin lost a 9-7 decision to the LadyBulldogs in the nightcap. Co-Lin (18-16, 6-10) resumes playSaturday at Hinds, starting at 2 p.m.

McCaffery credited Co-Lin coach Allen Kent with giving her a voteof confidence before she stepped to the plate. “Coach had faith inme. I had to do it for the team.”

The victory snapped a 4-game, South Division losing skid. SouthDivision leader Gulf Coast suffered only its second loss in 14South games and fell to 24-9 overall. Redheaded relief pitcherLinsey Dickerson (10-5) absorbed the loss. In 6 innings of relief,Dickerson (2 K, 0 BB) gave up 6 hits and 2 runs.

Co-Lin sophomore hurler Bethany Pinkston(10-6) went all the way onthe mound in a gritty performance. She scattered 8 hits, struck out9, walked 8 and hit 1 batter. Her teammates committed 5errors.

“Bethany battled and worked her way out of a couple of toughsituations,” said Coach Kent. “We kicked it around some in thefield but we did a pretty good job on defense.

“Gulf Coast has one of the best hitting teams in the state.”

Gulf Coast starter Bayleigh Babin kept Co-Lin scoreless until thefourth inning. Haley Sones got Co-Lin’s offense rolling with aleadoff, solo homer that cleared the left-center field fence. Fivemore runs scored before Sones came to the plate again.

Pinkston’s bases-loaded grounder became the second out but BobbieCochran scored the tying run and it was 2-2. Emily Smith, whofinished with 4 hits, beat out a slow roller to shortstop andCo-Lin led 3-2. Lakin Lockhart delivered and RBI single for thefourth run and an outfield error sent the fifth and sixth runshome.C

Gulf Coast gained a 6-6 deadlock in the seventh when third basemanKayla Herbert slapped a 2-out, bases-loaded single to center. Aftera scoreless eighth, the Bulldogs plated the go-ahead run on athrowing error.

After a sacrifice bunt by Smith, Lockhart’s single drove inPinkston with the tying run in the bottom of the ninth, making it7-7.

The Bulldogs rallied for 4 runs in the top of the seventh to beatCo-Lin. Dickerson was the winning pitcher and Sarah Anthony (6-7)absorbed the loss. Anthony gave up 10 hits and 7 earned runs,fanning 4 and walking 2.

Co-Lin got homers from Sones and Moak. McCaffery tripled. Sonesalso hit 2 singles

Herbert tripled and doubled for the Bulldogs.
