Lady Cobras cruise past Loyd Star

The Wesson Lady Cobras captured a big 13-5 win over the LoydStar Lady Hornets Thursday night in Region 6-2A softballaction.

“I am very proud of the girls for playing hard,” said Wesson coachJackie Johnson. “We started to hit the ball really well in thefourth inning and capitalized on Loyd Star miscues.”

The Lady Hornets (2-10, 2-4) resume action today as they travel toSummit to battle the North Pike Lady Jaguars for a varsity gameonly beginning at 7 p.m.

The Lady Cobras (8-3-1, 4-1) will take the weekend off beforereturning to the diamond to host the Enterprise Lady Jackets.Junior varsity will start at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity at 6p.m.

Wesson 13, Loyd Star 5

Softball fans witnessed a typical district rivalry between twoteams battling hard to stay in the playoff hunt in the first threeinnings.

In the fourth inning, the Lady Cobras managed to pull away fromLoyd Star as they capitalize on the Lady Hornets miscues by scoringsix runs and added four more runs in the fifth inning.

The Lady Hornets refused to go down as they fought off the mercyrule as Lexie Butler hit a inside-the-park home run in the bottomof the fifth inning.

Loyd Star continued to battle back in the sixth and seventh inningsbut came up short at the end.

Wesson’s Abbey Smith provided a strong pitching performance, inrelief of starter McKenzie Rials, collecting five strikeouts andone walk. Mak Rials had no strikeouts and four walks. Bonnie Burksabsorbed the loss for the Lady Hornets with five strikeouts andfour walks.

Macie McQuage produced the offensive spark for the Lady Cobras withtwo doubles and a single. Abbey provided the fuel to the flameswith a double and two singles. Shauntay Walker smashed a double.McKenzie Rials and Christian Woods belted two singles apiece.Hitting safely were Hannah Brown and Ashton Newman.

Butler provided the offensive firepower for the Lady Hornets with ahome run. Sarah Falvey contributed the ammunition with a double andtwo singles. Julie Smith ripped a double and a single. Hannah Smithbelted a double. Loyd Star got singles from Haley Smith, AliGartman, Raigan Smith and Burks.

“Our girls fought hard,” said Loyd Star coach Jan Delaughter. “Thegirls have still got to understand that we need to play thecomplete seven innings to the games close and becompetitive.”

In JV action, the Loyd Star Lady Hornets rallied in the fourthinning to edge the Wesson Lady Cobras 5-4.

Kelsie McCullough was the winning pitcher for the Lady Hornets withone strikeout and six walks. Hailey Chassion suffered the setbackwith no strikeouts and three walks.

Raigan Smith was the offensive leader for Loyd Star with a double.Lexie Butler hit a single.

Marlee Hughes produced the offensive spark for Wesson with a doubleand a single. Ashton Newman belted a single.
