Allen’s pitching, 2 grand slams leave imprint on Union Jackets

Loyd Star’s Korey Allen left a lasting impression on the UnionYellow Jackets. He pitched a 15-4 Friday night victory and followedthat with a gigantic Saturday on Smith Field, slugging two grandslam homers in a 14-2 triumph against Union to sweep the Class 2Abest-of-three series.
Allen (4 K, 1 BB), a Copiah-Lincoln Community College signee,scattered seven hits in notching his eighth win of the seasonFriday night as the Hornets whipped host Union 15-4.
“Korey threw the ball well and we really hit the ball hard as ateam,” said Loyd Star coach Jonathan Breakfield, reviewing theFriday victory.
Loyd Star (26-4) resumes play this week against Taylorsville. TheTartars beat Bassfield 26-0 Saturday to sweep that series. Thebest-of-three series is tentatively set to begin Friday atTaylorsville.
“Korey had a great day at the plate for us,” said Breakfield,noting the pair of grand slams. “The road is going to get tougherthis week. We must keep hitting the ball and playing gooddefense.”
Loyd Star 15, Union 4
Sophomore first baseman Logan Smith assisted the Hornets with asolo homer and a double, including 3 RBIs. Allen had 3 hits. CoreyFunk had 2 hits. Marquis Hayes collected 4 RBIs and a triple.
Loyd Star 14, Union 2
The Hornets ended a scoreless duel with a 7-run second inning. Theyplated 7 more in the fifth as Allen’s walkoff grand slam concludedthe game.
Junior right-hander Corey Funk (3 K, 1 BB) tossed a 2-hitter inSaturday’s blowout. Funk raised his record to a perfect 7-0 on theseason. Funk also had a pair of his team’s hits.
Korey Allen collected 8 RBIs.
