Twenty players selected for District Seven team

WESSON – Co-Lin’s Sullivan Field was the site for the 2011Southwest Mississippi State Games of Mississippi Baseball tryoutslast Wednesday as nearly 80 players from South Mississippi andparts of Louisiana who played in the MAIS districts worked out infront of coaches.

Coaching this year’s group are Cass Brister of Enterprise-Lincolnand Jody Britt of Bogue Chitto. The team contains 20 players on theroster.

Britt and Brister watched the players running 60-yard sprints,measuring arm speed and accuracy during outfield, infield, pitchingdrills, and hitting.

Making the team locally were Brookhaven High products Dillon Newell(RHP/catcher), Houston Case (RHP/SS), and J.B. Perkins (INF).

From Brookhaven Academy: outfielder Christian “Bubba” Keene andleft- handed hurler Gage Posey made the squad.

Enterprise product Connor Burke, a crafty infielder, and BogueChitto catcher Hunter Ginn also made the team, as did LawrenceCounty infielder Matt Patterson.

Class 4A State champion Columbia had two players make the roster:outfielders Hakeem Forbes and Ty Randal.

North Pike’s Jacob Fleming, a 6-foot-4, 270-pound right-handedpitcher, made the squad. Natchez Cathedral catcher Caleb Upton andAdams County Christian School RHP/INF Jake Brumfield were alsoadded to the list.

Also on the team are West Marion infielder Heath Bidwell andNatchez Trinity’s Jake Winston at shortstop.

Two out of state players made the squad: shortstop/second basemanJosh Byars of Academy AAA champion Oak Forest and Bowling Greenfirst baseman Cruz Saranide.

The State Games of Mississippi baseball tournament begins June 22at Meridian Community College. All eight Mississippi districts willcompete in the double-elimination tournament.
