Funeral services for Vernon Smith, ofWesson, are 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17, at New Sight BaptistChurch, with burial in the church cemetery. Riverwood FamilyFuneral Service is in charge of arrangements.

    Visitation is Friday at 1 p.m. at New Sight Baptist Church.

    Mr. Smith, 94, died Sept. 13, 2011, at his residence. He was bornon Jan. 28, 1917, to Hiram Rankin Smith and Mattie ChandlerSmith.

    He served in the military police of the Army Air Corps during WorldWar II. He was also a road foreman. He was a member of New SightBaptist Church where he served as a Sunday school director forseveral years and was an inactive deacon.

    Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Modena WellsSmith; his son, Virgil Rankin Smith; his sisters, Nellie Case, LolaCase, Marie Boling; his brother, H. Carnie Smith; his nieces andnephews, Janice Allen, Larry Allen, Shelby Smith and CarolynRoberts.

    Survivors are his sons, Sherman Smith and wife, Frances, Johnny V.Smith and wife, Doris, all of Brookhaven; his brother, Alfred Smithand wife, Doris, of Byram; his sisters, Edna Smith Holloway andEthel Mae Smith Britt, both of Brookhaven; his grandchildren, AprilSmith, Mark Smith, Alecia Smith and John Daniel Smith; his sixgreat-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

    In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Heuck’s RetreatLibrary Fund, the New Sight Baptist Church Library Fund or HospiceMinistries at 397 Brookhaven St., Brookhaven MS 39601.
