Monday shooting, Saturday accident investigated

Investigations are ongoing into a Mondaynight shooting and a Saturday night hit-and-run incident, saidBrookhaven Police Chief Pap Henderson.
In the most recent incident, Steve A. Smith, 59, was shot threetimes Monday night at the former Campbell Apartments on Zetus Road,Henderson said.
Smith was transported to King’s Daughters Medical Center. As ofTuesday morning, Henderson said Smith seemed to be in stablecondition.
Smith’s wife was at the scene and witnessed the incident, but wasnot injured, according to Henderson.
Henderson said his department does have a suspect in theshooting.
“We have a good idea about what the cause of the shooting was,”said Henderson, declining to comment further pending aninvestigation.
Police are also on the lookout for a suspect believed to have beeninvolved in a hit-and-run accident Saturday night.
Henderson said that, according to witnesses, a vehicle was drivingat a high rate of speed on Brignall Road when its driver lostcontrol of the car and hit a 15-year-old and a 16-year-old.
Neither victim has been identified.
The 15-year-old was injured more severely than the 16-year-old.Both victims were transported to the hospital.
As of Tuesday morning the 15-year-old is in a hospital in Jacksonwhile the 16-year-old may have been released, Henderson said.
The police have a suspect they are seeking to apprehend.
“We know who it is,” Henderson said. “We located the vehicle.”
According to Henderson, Chris Daniel, believed to be in his 20, wasallegedly located Saturday night at his father’s house on BrignallRoad and fled when police officers arrived.
