Loyd Star, West Lincoln in tournament victories

The West Lincoln Bears and Loyd Star Hornets secured wins Friday night in Day Two baseball action in the Lincoln County Tournament on a soggy Smith Field.

     The Bears managed to knock off the Enterprise Yellow Jackets 10-5 in the early games and the Hornets remained undefeated in the tournament with 11-5 victory over the Bogue Chitto Bobcats in the nightcap.

     Due to Saturday morning rain shower, the Bogue Chitto vs. West Lincoln and Enterprise vs. Loyd star games were cancelled.

     West Lincoln (2-3) resumes action Monday, hosting the South Pike Eagles. Junior varsity begins at 5 p.m. followed by the varsity at 7.

     Loyd Star, Enterprise and Bogue Chitto return to action Tuesday. The Bobcats (2-2) visit Tylertown. The Hornets (3-2) invade Bassfield. The Jackets (2-2) travel to Liberty to battle Amite County. Game times begin with junior varsity at 4:30 p.m., followed by the varsity at 6:30.

W. Lincoln 10, Enterprise 5

     After a 15-minute rain delay, the Bears managed to get their bats going as they quickly grabbed a 10-0 lead by the fourth inning. The Jackets battled back to trim West Lincoln’s lead to 10-5 and held off the Bears’ attempt to end the game early.

     Brady Wilson pitched the win for the Bears as the starter. He collected five strikeouts and three walks. Junior left-hander Jared Case (3K, 1BB) captured the save in relief.

     Dylan Smith suffered the setback for the Jackets with one strikeout and no walks. Jackson Cole (9K, 2BB) pitched in relief for Enterprise.

     Tyler Roberts directed the Bears offensively with a double and two singles. Hunter Fauver contributed three singles. Tyler Moak, Jacob Lea, and Wilson ripped a double and a single apiece. Hitting safely were Jared Case and Jeremy Laird.

     “I could not be more proud of the guys for fighting back after the beating we took the night before,” said West Lincoln coach Steve Barrington. “Hopefully, this game will show the willingness of this team’s ability to bounce back after a tough loss.”

     Logan Killingworth crushed a 2-run home run in the fifth to lead the Jackets. Konner Burke and Smith provided a double apiece. Chance Owens, Blake Fugler and Leighton Jordan hit safely.

     “We came out really flat,” said Enterprise coach Cass Brister. “The guys finally showed up in the fifth and did a good job fighting back. Overall, I was very pleased that the guys did try to fight back. But to be successful, you must be ready to play every team.”

Loyd Star 11, Bogue Chitto 5

     Baseball fans witnessed an offensive show in the nightcap as Bogue Chitto and Loyd Star lit up the scoreboard in the first three innings of action. The Hornets held a 9-4 advantage and held on for the victory.

     Junior right-hander Branden Canny was the winning pitcher for the Hornets. He pitched the complete game collecting six strikeouts and five walks.

     Zach Avants suffered the setback as the starter for the Bobcats with two strikeouts and four walks. Nick Parker (2K, 3BB) pitched in relief.

     Sophomore outfielder Seth Farmer led the offensive charge for the Hornets with a home run and a single. Corey Funk contributed a double and two singles. Hitting safely were Taylor Jones, Cori Crowe, Brendan Brister and Logan Smith.

     “Branden Canny pitched a great game,” said Loyd Star coach Jared Britt. “The guys battled hard and finished strong, but our defense needs to get better. Overall, I was really pleased with our ability to put the ball into play.”

     Brock Roberts was the leader for the Bobcats with a triple and a single. Seniors Colton McClendon and Hunter Ginn hit safely.

     “We have got to play much better offensively and defensively to compete with the teams we have on our schedule,” said Bogue Chitto coach Jody Britt.
