Wesson Cobras capture third straight 2A South State title

WESSON — The Wesson Cobras knocked out the Loyd Star Hornets 5-2 to capture their third straight South State Class 2A tennis championship title Wednesday.

     “I am extraordinarily proud of the team’s effort,” said Wesson first year coach Rusty Newman. “They have worked really hard and earned their third 2A South State championship in a row. We faced a really strong Loyd Star team.”

     “I inherited a great program,” added Newman. “I am looking forward to next week’s championship game at Clinton.”

     Brandon Nettles won the boys’ singles in straight sets. Brandi McInnis and Taylor Beasley captured the No. 2 girls doubles.

     Wesson’s No. 1 boys doubles, Zack Wilson and Cullen Greer, and No. 2 boys’ doubles of Patrick Lumley and Steve Del Cid were victorious. In mixed double action, Josh Smith and Abigail Schimmel swept Loyd Star in two sets.

     The Cobras will advance to the State Championship and face the Madison St. Joseph Bruins in a team event for the 2A State title at Mississippi College.
