Effie Hammons, of the Hilltop Community in Brookhaven, was called home on August 1, 2012. Mrs. Hammons was born in Hayti, Mo. on January 10, 1932. She moved to Illinois at a young age and there she met the love of her life, Robert “Teak” Hammons who just was discharged out of World War II.

They immediately fell in love and married. They raised five children and had a stillborn baby girl. Mrs. Hammons was a fine homemaker and an avid gardener. She worked in her younger years as a meat packer for Swift and Company, but retired from the MS Dept. of Corrections where she worked as a dental assistant at Oakley Training School. Her greatest achievement was her five children whom she loved dearly. Later in life it was her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church.
