Lady Cats cruise; Loyd Star boys win

The Bogue Chitto Lady Cats and the Loyd Star Hornets secured wins in a Lincoln County showdown before the Christmas holidays Friday night at Loyd Star Gymnasium.

     In the girls game, the Lady Cats steam rolled the Lady Hornets for a 67-25 victory.

     In boys action, the Hornets stung the Bobcats 59-40.

     Bogue Chitto returns to action after the Holidays, on Friday Jan. 5, to host the Wesson Cobras and Lady Cobras for four games. Junior high begins at 4 and 5 p.m. The varsity girls tip off at 6 p.m., followed by the boys.

     Loyd Star resumes Friday, Jan. 11. They host the Enterprise Jackets and Lady Jackets for four games. Junior varsity action starts at 4 and 5 p.m.

Bogue Chitto 67, Loyd Star 25

     The Lady Cats (15-2, 1-0) quickly seized control of the game with their tough defense and cruised to a 15-2 lead after one quarter of action.

     Junior Earlneshia Dillon led the offensive charge with 16 points and 6 rebounds. Senior guard Adrienne Wallace pumped in 14 points. Mattie Avants had 12 points. Wallace and Avants were the leaders on the boards with 8 rebounds apiece.

     “The girls played really hard,” said BC coach Christi Terrell. “Defensively, we played pretty well and OK offensively. We managed to take care of the ball and execute our game plan. Overall, I am pleased with the girls effort and glad to get the win before the holidays.”

     Freshman guard Toni Banks was the offensive leader for the Lady Hornets (2-12, 0-1) with 6 points. Freshman center Jordan Shelby directed Loyd Star on the boards with 7 rebounds and 3 blocked shots.

     “We did not do a good job handling their pressure,” said Loyd Star coach Billy Vaughn. “We made way too many turnovers.”

Loyd Star 59, Bogue Chitto 40

     The Hornets and Bobcats provided a good, classic bout for their basketball fans as both teams battled back and forth.

     Loyd Star came out strong and took control of the first quarter with a 15-6 lead. In the second quarter, the Bobcats rallied to trim the Hornets’ lead to 30-18 at halftime.

     In the second half, Loyd Star outscored Bogue Chitto 29-22 to secure the triumph.

     Sophomore forward Edrick Alsworth pumped in a team-high 15 points to lead three Hornets in double figures. Caleb Yarborough contributed 14 points. Senior Terion Williams netted a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Tobias Dillion had 10 steals.

     “This was a total team effort,” said Loyd Star coach Gene (Moochie) Britt. “Offensively and defensively, we executed really well. We managed to shut down Bogue Chitto’s inside game and forced them to shoot outside shots. This is a good win to head into the holidays.”

     Senior forward Dennis Rogers was the top scorer for BC with a game-high 16 points.

     The Bobcats (3-13, 1-0) are coached by Gareth Sartin.

     Junior Varsity

     The Lady Hornets (4-1) surpassed the Lady Cats 26-20. Toni Banks led Loyd Star with 8 points. Shelby added 6.

     Karlie Williams paced BC with 8 points. Lauren McCaffrey and Brooke Myers contributed 5 points apiece.
