Bassfield rips Hornets

BASSFIELD – Trayrell Wright pumped in 23 points and Jeff Smith scored 14 in leading the Bassfield Yellowjackets to a 76-57 Friday night win over the Loyd Star Hornets in Region 7-2A basketball action.
The Loyd Star girls also lost to Bassfield but additional information was unavailable at press time.
Loyd Star hosts Wesson Tuesday night for 4 games, starting at 4 p.m.
The Hornets (8-9, 1-3) got a game-high 26 points from sophomore Eldrick Alsworth, plus 5 rebounds and 3 steals. Terion Williams chipped in 15 points. Williams, Caleb Yarborough and Brad Jasper had 5 rebounds apiece. Yarborough also made 4 assists and Tobias Dillon made 3.
Loyd Star coach Moochie Britt said he was impressed by the Jackets. “Bassfield is a very good team. They got a lot of rebounds on putbacks. The first-quarter killed us. It was a very physical game.”
Loyd Star trailed 21-3 at the end of the first quarter and never recovered.
In the JV game, Bassfield edged Loyd Star 38-35. Levi Redd scored 11 points, Dorian Beard 10 and Javion Beard 9.
J. Williams had 20 points for the Jackets.
