Brookhaven police are searching for the assailant in a Sunday afternoon shooting that left one man hospitalized, Police Chief Pap Henderson said.
At 2:28 p.m. Sunday, a shooting on Center Street was called in to the Brookhaven Police Department. The victim, Latron Dixon, 36, was shot on the left side of his face, under his chin, Henderson said.
“The shot went through his mouth,” said the police chief.
The victim was transported to King’s Daughters Medical Center and then airlifted to Jackson, said Henderson.
Dixon was only hit one time, though other shots were apparently fired.
Police have a suspect they’re seeking but don’t yet have anyone in custody. Henderson said the victim and assailant are presumed to have known each other, but authorities haven’t had a chance to speak with Dixon.
There seems to have been an altercation preceding the shooting, which happened in the street near a residence the victim and assailant had both been at.
“Supposedly the suspect went out and said ‘I heard you want to fight me,'” Henderson said.
Dixon didn’t live on Center Street and has an address of 505 Vanzie St. The police chief wouldn’t say whether the suspect lived on Center Street.
Police recovered a 9 mm pistol used in the shooting.
Dixon and his nephew apparently wrestled the weapon away from the shooter, Henderson said.
Police hope to speak with Dixon Tuesday, who’s said to be in stable condition.
There were witnesses to the incident, Henderson said, but he didn’t know how many.
The chief wouldn’t release a description of the suspect police are seeking.
