FOXWORTH – Jamal Peters scored 21 points to lead four players in double figures and the No. 1-seeded Bassfield Yellowjackets buzzed to a 76-55 Friday night win over the Wesson Cobras in the championship finals of the Region 7-2A Tournament.
The Cobras (20-10), coached by Rusty Newman, will host the Lake Hornets Tuesday night at 7, in the opening round of the South State 2A playoffs.
“This was a tough physical game against a good Bassfield team,” said Coach Newman. His Cobras split with Bassfield during the regular season, winning at Wesson.
“We played hard the whole game but we let several opportunities to take control of the game slip away,” said Newman. “We missed some key free throws and layups early in the game that could have made a big difference. We tried to slow the game down.”
The Cobras trailed 29-26 at halftime. Bassfield’s pressure defense took its toll in the second half.
Farrod Green led Wesson with 15 points. Kaleb Skinner added 14 and Terry Bownln 10.
“I’m proud of my guys for the effort they gave,” he continued. “I hope we can put together a run in the playoffs next week.”

Wesson senior Terry Brown was recognized as the Region 7-2A Most Valuable Player. Teammates Kaleb Skinner, Eddie McCullum and Farrod Green also were named to the all-region squad.
Representing Loyd Star on the all-region team are Edrick Alsworth, Terion Williams and Caleb Yarborough. Enterprise is represented by Forrest Scott.
