Brookhaven Academy shuts out CA Colonels

Brookhaven Academy head baseball coach Casey Edwards hopes his Cougars are peaking at the right time as they begin the last two weeks of their District 5-AA schedule. They host Columbia Academy tonight in a district test, starting with a junior varsity game at 4:30 in Harold Williams Ballpark. The varsity plays at 6:30.

The Cougars, 8-8 overall and 3-0 in the district, are coming off a 9-0 shutout win against the visiting Copiah Academy Colonels. Starting pitcher Tanner Parvin and reliever Gage Posey combined on a 6-hitter.

“We continue to swing the bats well,” said Edwards. “Several guys had big hits for us.

“Our pitchers, Tanner and Gage, got ahead early (in the count) and worked fast. We need to keep this momentum going into the last two weeks of the regular season.”

The Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second and plated 3 more runs in the third. A 4-run sixth gave them their final margin.,

At the plate, Posey homered, singled and drove in 3 runs to highlight his team’s 13-hit offensive. Heath Hickman singled twice and doubled, accounting for 2 RBI. Steven Williams had 3 singles and an RBI.

Matthew Evans doubled and singled for the Cougars. Landon Nettles slapped a double. J.P. Jackson singled.

Parvin struck out 2 batters and walked 1 in notching the victory.

Jacob Ashley (1K, 0BB) was the losing pitcher.

The Colonels, coached by Stephen Cooksey, got doubles from Zane Frazier and Ashley. Zach Mattingly singled twice. Peyton Murphy and Josh Cook singled.
