Lady Cobras elude Loyd Star, secure Region 7-2A crown

     Sophomore shortstop Kayla Britt doubled and homered for Wesson. The first home run of her career put the Lady Cobras up 6-5 in the sixth as they escaped Loyd Star with a narrow Region 7-2A triumph.

     “It was a crazy game,” said Wesson coach Jackie Johnson. “I’m proud to get the win. My girls did what we had to do to get the victory.”

     Wesson had beaten Loyd Star 12-1 earlier in the season. Loyd Star loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the seventh but failed to score.

     Wesson (13-2, 7-0) secured the Region 7-2A title and earned the right to host an opening round series in the Class 2A state playoffs, which begin April 29.

     Wesson entertains region rival Enterprise on Tuesday.

     Abbey Smith pitched the victory. She struck out 2 batters and walked 2.

     At the plate,  second baseman Bailey Middleton singled and doubled for Wesson. Center fielder Cheyenne Gladden also singled and doubled. Hailey Chassion doubled. Macie McQuage, Abbey Smith, Sarah Robinson,  Taylor Smith, singled.

     Loyd Star’s Hannah Smith singled and doubled.  Lexie Butler singled twice. Ali Gartman doubled. Julie Smith and Raigan Smith singled.

     Pitcher Kelsie McCullough started for Loyd Star. She was replaced by Makenzie Smith in the second inning.
