Big rally lifts Hornets over Bassfield’s Yellowjackets

     BASSFIELD – The Loyd Star Hornets rallied past the Bassfield Yellowjackets 12-9 Monday in a Region 7-2A baseball game. They erased a 9-3 deficit to notch their 16th victory of the season.

     Pitcher Josh Hodges (3K, 0BB) picked up the win in 2 innings of relief. Cori Crowe (4K, 0BB) got the save.

     Braden Smith started on the mound for Loyd Star and was replaced by Caleb Yarborough in the first as Bassfield plated 4 runs.

     “We started out flat and not ready to play,” said Loyd Star coach Jared Britt. “We finally got our bats going a little in the sixth,” scoring 7 runs on 3 hits and 3 errors.

     “Cori Crowe came in and shut the door,” Britt added. “Overall, I’m pleased with the win but we have to get smarter on the base paths and play a complete game.”

     Britt’s Hornets (16-4, 8-2), runners-up to Wesson in the region race, play at St. Andrew’s Saturday, starting with a junior varsity game at 11 a.m.

     Against Bassfield, the Hornets collected 9 hits and capitalized on 7 errors. Seth Farmer’s homer, triple and single sparked the attack. Brendyn Brister homered.

     Crowe doubled and singled. Brett Calcote doubled. Hodges hit a 2-run double in the sixth. Smith had an RBI single.

     Jamez Applewhite (2K, 2BB) was the losing pitcher.  He hit 2 singles and a double to lead the offense.

     Two doubles and a single by Gary Lofton supported Bassfield’s attack. Kevin Hathorn doubled and singled. Alex Reese, Curtis Mikell and Tavarus Reese singled.
