Area players seek state tennis titles

A large contingent of area students will pursue MHSAA State Tennis Tournament championships Thursday and Friday of this week. Champions will be crowned Friday afternoon in girls singles, boys singles, girls doubles, boys doubles and mixed doubles.

Meanwhile, Brookhaven Academy is hosting the MAIS Class AA South State Tournament at Brookhill. The Cougars, coached by David Misner, are district champions and received an opening round bye to this afternoon.

Enterprise, entered in the MHSAA Class 2A Tournament at Parham Bridges Tennis Center in Jackson, is represented by Caroleah Brister in girls singles. The Yellow Jackets are coach by Leah Brister.

Loyd Star, also entered in 2A, is represented by Caylee Grace Yarborough and Faith Bergeron in girls doubles.

Wesson, the Region 3-2A champion, is coached by Rod Martin. The Cobras are represented by Brandon Nettles in boys singles, Brandi McInnis in girls singles, and Steve Del Cid and Taylor Beesley in mixed doubles. In an all-Wesson boys doubles region finals, Dylan Ingle and Austin Levinson defeated C.J. Viramontez and Ludwig Krautz, landing both pairs in the state tourney.

West Lincoln is sending 8 players to the 1A championships at the Ridgeland Tennis Center. They are Caroline Laird in girls singles, Gage Butler in boys singles, Katey and Kara Clark in girls doubles, Ryan Gill and Tay Applewhite in boys doubles and Allie Britt and Sebastian Harrell in mixed doubles.

West Lincoln is coached by Karen Dunaway.

Lawrence County, coached by Rob Alford, is competing in Class 4A. They are represented by Drake Nelson in boys singles and Michael Polk and Cadie Durr in mixed doubles.
