Newman said Christopher Allen Shell, 45, of Roxie was also shot by Wallace in the arm during the incident and sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Wallace was taken into custody without incident and faces murder and aggravated assault charges, the sheriff said.

Deputies responded to a call made by an attendant at the gas station at 5:20 a.m. Thursday.

According to Newman, in addition to the attendant on duty, there were a few customers in the store at the time of the shooting.

Newman said the shooting occurred just inside the entrance of the store.

As of Friday morning, the motive is unclear and the incident is still under investigation.

“This is a tragic incident for all three parties involved,” Newman said in an interview Friday morning.

“These are good, solid country names in Franklin County,” Newman said. “I am very familiar with all three families.”
