CLEVELAND, Ohio – Frank Moak brought home four gold medals from the U.S. Senior Olympic Games. He captured gold in two time trials and two road races, in the age 50-54 division.

Saturday’s weather conditions were a far cry from the head and humidity of Mississippi. Competitors were greeted by temperatures in the upper 50s and rain in the 40K road race.

The racers departed from downtown and got on an interstate. “We made eight trips over that bridge. It was sort of like the (Lake) Ponchatrain bridge,” at New Orleans

“Those painted stripes on the road were like glass,” said Moak. “There was a 90-degree turn and a U-turn on the course.”

Moak road with caution and was about 40 seconds off the front runners.

“I knew there would be crashes,” said Moak. “I saw three fall in one turn and then I saw six more fall.”

On Sunday, in more favorable weather conditions, Moak raced in a 20K. “I wasn’t used to racing that distance because it was short, about 12 miles.”

Moak recalled the last 100 meters. “The finishing stretch was into a headwind at the convention center. There were TV stations there and a big crowd. I started to raise my arms in victory. It wound up being a photo finish. I started celebrating too early and almost lost.

“It felt good to be racing among my peers instead of against kids,” said Moak. “There were over 600 riders there.”

Moak was wearing his Herring Gas racing team uniform. He won a 10K time trial on Wednesday and a 5K on Thursday.
