Funeral services for LG Young of Smithdale are 11 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 16, at Concord Baptist Church, with burial in the church cemetery. The Rev. Tony Mullins and the Rev. Matt Emfinger will officiate. Hartman-Sharkey Funeral Home in McComb is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation is Sunday from 5 until 9 p.m. at the funeral home and Monday from 10 until 11 a.m. at the church.
Mr. Young, 88, died Sept. 13, 2013 at his home in Franklin County. He was born Dec. 15, 1924 to David Foster Young Sr. and Flora Elizabeth Young.
Mr. Young graduated high school at Carter’s Creek in Pike County. He continued his education at Southwest Community College and Mississippi State University. He was an educator for over 38 years. He served in the US Navy during WWII. LG Young was a member of Concord Baptist Church, served on the Copiah-Lincoln Community College Board of Trusties for 24 years, was a member of SAR and was a Franklin County representative for selective service.
He is preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Addie Delores Beard and a baby sister; and a brother, Paul Jones Young.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mavis Burris Cowart Young; four sons and spouses, Gwyn H. Young and Velesta, Travis C. Young and Shellah, Keith Young and friend, Frankie King, and Terry B. Young and Vicki; seven grandchildren, Lane Young and wife, Audrey, Jessica Hynum and husband, Brandon, Nick Young, Dana Young, Sarah Young Ellis, Matthew Young, Daniel Young and Chelsea Pickering; six great-grandchildren; one brother, David Foster Young Jr.; and two sisters, Martha Whittington and Jean Tynes.
Pallbearers will be Daniel Young, Matthew Young, Nick Young, Lane Young, Brandon Hynum and Ricky Paul Young.
