BA Lady Cougars edge Victor

The Brookhaven Academy Lady Cougars captured a 13-12 victory over the ladies of the Victor Home School Thursday night to end their regular season on a winning note in fastpitch softball action at the Lady Cougars softball complex.

“It was good to get the win to finish the regular season,” said BA coach Kaylin Lofton. “I was very pleased with my girls’ efforts. They fought hard until the very end.

Overall, we are extremely excited to be in the playoffs,” continued Lofton. “The girls have worked hard to get here and we are looking forward to make a big impact in the postseason march.”

The Lady Cougars (10-14, 5-3) return to postseason action after a two-year layoff. They will be participating in the MAIS AA South State Softball Tournament at Amite. BA begins their march Saturday against Central Private at 9 a.m. at the Ethel Stratton-Vance Sports Complex.

This postseason event is a double elimination tournament that starts Saturday and concludes Monday. If a rainout occurs, the tournament will begin Monday and finish Tuesday.

BA 13, Victor 12

The Lady Cougars overcame a sluggish start and cut into Victor’s 8-0 lead in the third inning by pushing seven runs.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, BA secured their first lead of the contest with a two-run jolt to claim a 9-8 advantage.

In the fifth inning, Victor charged back to reclaim a brief 12-9 lead before the Lady Cougars answered with a four-run rally to capture the victory.

Alli Livingston was the winning hurdler for BA with three strikeouts and five walks.

Melanie Crum suffered the loss for Victor with one strikeout and seven walks.

Livingston sparked the Lady Cougars offense with a double and a single. Anna Smith, Anna Grace Covington and Alex Rae Smith fueled the flames with a pair of singles. Olivia Thornton contributed a double. Maura Dunaway and KK Jordan hit safely.

Crum was the offensive leader for Victor with a double and a single. Shelby Davis and Olivia Witt hit safely.

In JV action, Brookhaven Academy crushed Victor 11-4.

Alex Rae Smith pitched the win for BA.

Amanda Rushing and Dunaway paced the Lady Cougars at the plate with a triple apiece.
