Dennis Lavon Plunkett, 85, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Sept. 25, 2013, at his residence in the Divide community in Monticello.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Sept. 28, at Divide Memorial Methodist Protestant Church in Monticello. Interment followed at Divide Memorial Methodist Protestant Church cemetery. Wilson Funeral Home of Monticello was in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Plunkett was born Feb. 4, 1928, in Yazoo City to Joseph Claude Plunkett and Nora Vista Brand Plunkett.

He worked numerous jobs, including owning and operating a general store, construction, and working in the oil field. He was also a Merchant Marines veteran.

He married his sweetheart, Vivian Lovie Smith, in 1950. He was a member of the Methodist Protestant faith.

He enjoyed reading westerns and the daily newspaper, watching television, especially the weather on the 10 o’clock news, eating home-cooked meals prepared by his wife and daughters, and drinking coffee and sweet tea.

Preceding him in death were his parents; two brothers, Clarence Plunkett and Walton Plunkett, and one infant daughter.

Survivors are his wife of 63 years, Vivian Lovie Smith Plunkett, of Monticello; sister, Mary Belle Perry, Bentonia; sister-in-law, Patsy Smith, of Monticello; daughters, Mary Maxie and husband, Bob, Martha Walker and husband, Dana, Julie Wells and husband, Phillip; son, Thomas Plunkett and wife Michele, all of Monticello; grandchildren, Matt Maxie, of Monticello, Dawn Allen and husband, Jason, of Summitt, Michelle Smith and husband, Nick, of Monticello, Delores “Dee Dee” Earls and husband, Caleb, of Silver Creek, Kelsey Wells, of Monticello, and Aaron Plunkett, of Monticello; great-grandchildren, LeAnne Walker, Kayla McKenzie, David McKenzie, Trey McKenzie, all of Summitt, Carter Smith, of Monticello, and Easton Lane Earls, of Silver Creek; step-great-grandchildren, Summer Allen and Ryan Allen, both of Monticello; along with a host of nieces and nephews.
