LUMBERTON – The No.1- ranked Bogue Chitto Bobcats remain undefeated after hanging onto a 17-12 victory over the Lumberton Panthers Friday night in Region 4-1A football action.
The Bobcats (7-0, 5-0) managed to drive in down the field on their first drive on the game but the Lumberton Panthers defense came up big to keep the Bobcats out of the endzone. Coach Gareth Sartin called on his place kicker Cameron Price to kick a field goal at the 8:40 mark of the first quarter. The field goal unit lined up, and Cameron Price kicked the ball right down the middle of the uprights for a 19-yard field goal.
On the next possession, the Bobcats relied on their strong defense to hold their ground and keep Lumberton from moving the ball. After the Panthers snapped the ball over the punter’s head, BC had a good field position.
The Bobcats’ offense made the first mistake of the ballgame when Brock Roberts threw his first interception of the game to Lumberton’s Zack Morris. The Bobcats defense stood strong and held the Panthers out of the end zone.
In the second quarter, BC’s offense finally figured out the formula for getting in the end zone. At the 8:11 mark, Bobcat Brock Roberts made a 10-yard run and Cameron Price’s kick was good. The defense for the Bobcats held Lumberton out of the end zone again.
On the Bobcats’ next possession, the offense managed to milk the clock to give their defense some time to rest. Brock Roberts connected with Dennis Rogers on a five-yard pass and Cameron Price’s kick was good at the 2:38 mark.
The Lumberton Panthers finally found the end zone when Javier Chavis caught a 21-yard touchdown pass at the 2:15 mark in the second quarter and the two-point conversion was no good.
The Panthers managed to get the ball back before the end of the second quarter, but the Bobcats defense held Lumberton out of the end zone again.
In the third quarter, the Bobcats came out of the locker room a little bit sloppy and gave the momentum to Lumberton. At the 8:49 mark in the third quarter, BC senior quarterback Brock Roberts threw his second interception of the night. The Panthers punched it into the end zone at the 8:00 mark in the third quarter, and the two-point conversion was no good.
At the 2:56 mark of the third quarter, senior running back Jermaine Blackwell made his second mistake of the ballgame when he fumbled the ball and the Lumberton Panthers recovered.
In the fourth quarter, the Bobcats defense came up with a big play when Damein Terrell picked the ball off at the 4:18 mark of the ballgame. Bogue Chitto needed that interception because both teams were struggling to find the endzone.
BC’s Denis Rogers came up with a big catch and run for about 15 yards on a third down conversion to get the first down at the 2:00 mark. After that, the Bobcats stalled again and had to punt to the Panthers. A short punt gave the Panthers a short field to work with. At the 1:10 mark of the fourth quarter, Bogue Chitto came up with the game-winning play when Roberts picked off a pass on the defense.
Offensively, Brock Roberts led the Bobcats with 15 carries for 113 yards and one touchdown. Jermaine Blackwell had 15 carries for 65 yards.
Roberts completed nine of 19 attempts for 160 yards and one touchdown. Damein Terrell was the top receiver with three catches for 97 yards. Dennis Rogers had five catches for 59 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, Jeremy Blackwell led BC with 14 tackles. The “Big Men” Seth Hodges and Devaris Bullock had eight takedowns apiece. Roberts had eight tackles and an interception. Kayin Perkins and Damien Terrell had seven tackles each. Terrell had an interception.
Both teams will be on the road next week. Bogue Chitto will travel to the coast to take on Resurrection. The Panthers visit Stringer to take on the Red Devils. Both games will be played at 7 p.m. next Friday.
