Playoff fever captivates area football fans

Playoff fever is in the air for local football fans and players as week 12 of the Friday Night Lights football frenzy gets under way.

Bogue Chitto and Brookhaven will play their final regular season games this Friday with playoff seedings on the line. Bogue Chitto visits Stringer to battle the Red Devils for the Region 4-1A championship, while Brookhaven invades Carriere to tangle with the Pearl River Central Blue Devils for the final playoff spot in the Region 3-5A race.

Region 2A, 3A and 4A begin their playoff march this Friday. Loyd Star enter the Class 2A playoffs as the fourth seed in the Region 7-2A race and will travel to Taylorsville to play the Taylorsville Tartars.

In the 3A classification, Franklin County visits Seminary and Hazlehurst hosts West Marion.

In other area action, McComb invades Vancleave, St. Stanislaus welcomes North Pike and Copiah Academy entertains Columbia Academy.

Lawrence County, Enterprise, Wesson, West Lincoln and Brookhaven Academy have concluded their football season and are ready to start preparing for the upcoming season.

Brookhaven (7-3, 3-3),  coached by Tommy Clopton, enjoyed Senior Night at King Field after dominating on the Wingfield Falcons 47-6 last Friday.

This week, Ole Brook has high hopes of securing the final playoff spot in Region 3-5A as they play Pearl River Central in a winner-take-all contest.

The Blue Devils (4-6, 3-3), under the direction of coach Eric Collins, crushed the Natchez Bulldogs 62-36 last week.

A look at BHS’s top performers last week:

Offensively, Tre McDaniel was the leader for the Panthers with 147 yards rushing on 13 carries.

Defensively, Leo Lewis paced the Panthers with 11 tackles. Ty Hill contributed nine stops.

Bogue Chitto (9-1, 7-1),  coached by Gareth Sartin, suffered their first loss of the season after the Salem Wildcats escaped with a 21-20 victory over the Bobcats at Troy Smith Field Last Friday.

This week, BC is looking to take their frustration out on the Stringer Red Devils for the district championship and gain some revenge from last year lost playoff.

The Red Devils (9-1, 7-1) coached by Marlon Brannan, cruised past the Sacred Heart Crusaders 41-7 last week.

A look at BC’s top performers last week:

Offensively, Brock Roberts led BC with 17 carries for 77 yards and one touchdown. He also had three completions out of 10 attempts for 66 yards. Damein Terrell was the top receiver with two catches for 61 yards.

Jermaine Blackwell rushed 14 times for 104 yards and two touchdowns.

Defensively Jeremy Blackwell paced the team with 16 tackles and a forced fumble. Brock Roberts assisted with 10 tackles.

Loyd Star (3-7, 2-3) , under the direction of the Hornets’ assistant coaches, went through a huge playoff-like battle to claim the final playoff spot and advance to post season play with a 14-6 win over the West Lincoln Bears last week at Perry Miller Field.

This week, the Hornets have a tough task ahead of them as they prepare to battle the Taylorsville Tartars.

The Tartars (9-2, 5-0) led by coach Matt Caldwell, captured the 8-2A title with a 46-10 victory over Mize last week.

Loyd Star’s top performers last week included:

Offensively, Zac Arnold paced the Hornets with 102 yards rushing on 16 carries.

Defensively, Peyton Flowers directed Loyd Star with 20 tackles and a fumble recovery. Dustin Hart contributed 11 stops.

Franklin County (6-4, 3-2),  coached by first-year head coach Chris Calcote, finished in third place in the Region 7-3A action with a 30-6 win over the Jefferson County Tigers in Fayette last Friday.

This week, the Meadville-based Bulldogs invade Seminary for a battle of the Bulldogs in the opening round of the Class 3A playoffs.

Seminary (8-3, 4-1), coached by Brain Rials, claimed second place in the Region 8-3A race after being hammered by the Tylertown Chiefs 33-0 last week.

A look at Franklin County’s top performers last week:

Benard Selmon led the Bulldogs with 78 yards rushing on 19 carries.

Through the air, Malik Moore was seven of 11 for 76 yards.

Defensively, Jerry Hannon directed the Bulldogs with 11 tackles, two sacks and a pass deflection.

Hazlehurst (10-1, 5-0), coached by Randal Montgomery, returns to the playoffs with high hopes of defending the Class 3A state crown.

Last week, the Indians skinned the Tigers of Crystal Springs 56-28. This week, Hazlehurst has sharpened their tomahawks in preparation to entertain the West Marion Trojans.

The Trojans (5-6, 2-3), under the direction of coach Brad Duncan, surpassed Perry Central 22-20 last week to advance to the post season.

Hazlehurst’s top performers last week included:

Senior Jarvis Warner was the offensive leader for the Indians with 169 yards rushing on 10 carries. He also completed seven of 15 passes for 96 yards.

Defensively, Dycelious Reese and Damariun Wilson were the top hitter for the Indians with eight tackles apiece. Cyrus Goodwin and Johnkil Skipper provided six stops each.
