Lady Hornets defeat St. Andrews; boys fall

RIDGELAND – The Loyd Star Hornets and Lady Hornets captured a spilt against the St. Andrews Saints and Lady Saints Thursday night in basketball action.

In the girls’ game, the Lady Hornets used their speed to overwhelmed the Lady Saints 49-21.

In boys’ action, the Saints clipped the Hornets 58-53 to hand Loyd Star their first loss of the season.

Loyd Star continues action tonight as they prepare to host the Natchez Cathedral Green Wave for two games. The girls tip off at 6 p.m., followed by the boys.

Loyd Star 49, St. Andrews 21 

Marcie Givens was the offensive leader for the Lady Hornets (3-2) with 14 points and six steals. Jordan Shelby contributed 10 points and led on the boards with eight rebounds.

“The girls played really well,” said Loyd Star coach Gene “Moochie” Britt. “We shot the ball really well and handle their pressure defensively. Overall, I was very pleased with the girls effort.”

Kaylyn Ross was the top scorer for the Lady Saints with six points.

St. Andrews 58, Loyd Star 53 

Edrick Alsworth pumped in a team-high double-double to lead three players in double figures for the Hornets (3-1) with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Levi Redd contributed 13 points. Brad Jasper provided 11 points, five rebounds and four block shots.

“St. Andrews outplayed us in the first half,” continued Britt. “We had too many turnovers and made to many easy shots. In the second half, our effort was a lot better and fought back into the contest. We had a chance to win it at the end but couldn’t take advantage of St. Andrews mistakes in crucial situations

Sam Brown netted a game-high 19 points to lead the Saints. John Burnettie chipped in 10 points.

 In junior varsity action, the Lady Hornets and Saints secured victories.

In girls’ action, the Loyd Star Lady Hornets sting the Lady Saints 35-18. Mandy Russell paced Loyd Star with eight points. Kaylea Smith had six points. Julie Conway was the top scorer for St. Andrews with five points.

In the boys’ game, The Saints elude Loyd Star with 36-30. Lane Rogers paced the Hornets with eight points. Avery Leggett and Javion Beard provided six points. Shane Brown directed the Saints with nine points.
