Loyd Star sweeps St. Aloysius

The Loyd Star Hornets and Lady Hornets captured a pair of victories over the St. Aloysius Flashes Tuesday night in basketball action at Loyd Star gym.

In the girls’ game, the Lady Hornets stung the Lady Flashes 53-18.

In boys’ action, Loyd Star roasted the Flashes 71-36.

The Hornets return to action Thursday and visit Enterprise to take part in the annual Lincoln County Tournament. The Hornets and Lady Hornets battle the West Lincoln Bears and Lady Bears on the opening day. Game time is set for the girls at 4 p.m., followed by the boys.

Loyd Star 53, St. Aloysius 18 

The Lady Hornets (6-2) continued to roll with a impressive win over the Lady Flashes. Loyd Star came out strong and never looked back as they claimed a 29-13 advantage at halftime and coast to the win.

Marcey Givens was the offensive leader for the Lady Hornets with 12 points. Jordan Shelby was the rebounds leader with 11 rebounds and added eight points. Hannah Dickerson contributed eight points and eight rebounds.

“We shot the ball really well and worked together as a team,,” said Loyd Star coach Gene “Moochie” Britt. “I was pleased with their effort, and it was good to give everyone some playing time.”

Grace Upshaw paced the Lady Flashes with a team-high eight points.

Loyd Star 71, St. Aloysius 36 

The Hornets (6-1) had too much firepower for the Flashes to handle as Loyd Star flexed their muscles and hammer St. Aloysius.

Caleb Yarborough picked up a rare triple-double to lead the Hornets with 12 points, 10 steals and 10 assists. Edrick Alsworth led in the points and rebounds department with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Ethan Newman contributed 10 points.

“Offensively, we struggle to shoot the ball, but the guys continued to play hard on defense,” said Britt. “In the second half, we played a lot better.”

Benjamin Welp was offensive scoring leader for the Flashes with 12 points.

In junior high action,  Loyd Star sweeps St. Aloysius.

In the girls contest, the Lady Hornets claimed a 33-11 victory over the Lady Flashes. Juleciea Smith led Loyd Star with eight points. Megan Poole had seven points.

In boys’ action, Loyd Star surpassed St. Aloysius 44-31. Patrick Price paced the Hornets with 10 points. Dane Smith and Cade Hodges added nine points apiece.
