Loyd Star drains Natchez Cathedral

The Loyd Star Hornets and Lady Hornets surfed the Green Wave of Natchez Cathedral Friday night and bagged a pair of victories in high school basketball action.

In the girls’ game, the Lady Hornets dominated the Lady Green Wave to claim a 52-28 victory.

In boys’ action, the Hornets overpowered Cathedral with their athletic ability and depth to claim a 66-49 win.

Loyd Star will have a nice long break to enjoy the holidays, before returning the action Tuesday, Jan 7, on the road against Puckett for three games. The junior varsity girls begin the action at 5 p.m., followed by two varsity games.

Loyd Star 52, Cathedral 28 

The Lady Hornets (8-5) overcame a sluggish first quarter to take a 11-8 lead and plugged the Lady Green Wave in the second quarter with a 13-4 run to claim a 24-12 lead at halftime.

In the second half, Loyd Star continued their offensive onslaught with a 29-16 explosion to secured the win.

Junior guard Marcey Givens sparked the Lady Hornets with 17 points. Her twin sister, Megan Givens, helped fueled the flames with 10 points. Jordan Shelby was the leader on the boards for Loyd Star with nine rebounds.

“The girls played a great game,” said Loyd Star coach Gene ‘Moochie’ Britt. “We shot the ball a lot better and played hard on defense. Overall, I was pleased to get the win and give everyone some playing time.”

Elizabeth Smith was the top shooter for the Lady Green Wave with 13 points.

Loyd Star 66, Cathedral 49 

In the first quarter, Loyd Star and Cathedral battled back-and-forth in an offensive slugfest as the Hornets managed to claim a 21-17 lead.

In the second quarter, the slugfest continued as the Hornets edged the Green Wave with a 16-15 run to take a 37-32 lead into halftime.

In the second half, Loyd Star managed to overpower Cathedral 29-17 to complete the sweep Friday night.

The Hornets (10-2) had four players to reach double figures. Edrick Alsworth led the charge with 17 points and six rebounds. Caleb Yarborough contributed 13 points, six assists and four rebounds. Brad Jasper provided 11 points, six rebounds and blocked two shots. Levi Redd added 11 points, four rebounds and five steals.

“We had a very well balance scoring from everyone,” said Britt. “The guys played hard and played team ball. I was very pleased with their effort.”

James Coley provided the offensive firepower to lead Cathedral with a game-high 21 points.

In junior varsity action,  the Loyd Star boys knocked off Cathedral 51-39.

Javion Beard paced the Hornets with 22 points. Gregory Hooks had 11 points and Lane Rogers chipped in seven points.

Conner Mire directed the Green Wave with 10 points and Pate Shirley added nine points.
